| Research | Activities organized to produce research, both externally and internally funded. |
| Extension/Public Service | Noninstructional services beneficial to individual/groups external to ISU. |
| Instruction/Training | For credit and noncredit courses; academic, vocational, and technical instruction; regular, special and extension sessions are included. |
| Fellowship | Fellowship funds are usually designated as such by the funding organization and often at a premium rate. They are usually awarded to a specific individual by the sponsor. May include education allowance or published tuition rates and fees of an institution, trainee stipends, prizes, or awards. Recipients are not required to perform service to ISU or expected to repay. |
| Scholarship | Scholarship funds are usually requested for Undergraduate Students. They are usually awarded to a specific individual by the University. May include education allowance or published tuition rates and fees of an institution, trainee stipends, prizes, or awards. Recipients are not required to perform service to ISU or expected to repay. |
| Equipment | Funds given solely to support equipment purchases/fabrications. |
| Dept/Admin. Support | Central executive-level activities dealing with management/long-range planning; i.e. legal services, fiscal operations, ADP, personnel, storerooms, safety, security, public relations, etc. Operation and maintenance of physical plant, grounds, and facilities. Also includes utilities, fire protection, property insurance, etc. |
| Building | Funds given to support construction/renovation of ISU building. |

| New Project | A proposal that has never been awarded from the prospective sponsor or a project which is significantly changed in technical direction from previous awards from the prospective sponsor. |
| Continuation | Agency has formally recommended additional funding for rest of project period, but this continuation proposal must be submitted to authorize funding (i.e., Public Health Service). |
| Renewal | Agency has not recommended funding beyond current project period, but will consider it upon receipt of this proposal. |
| Subcontract | An agreement by a third party that is subordinate to a prime contract between two parties. |
| Unsolicited | Not in response to a particular program announcement. |
